"Relentless"
Label: Rising Force Records
It’s impossible for me to say which in line is this new album of the Swedish legendary guitarist, since my interest in his newest releases has gone down the drain, and as a result I lost track of them, probably like most of you had. But one thing to say is that it’s the second release with my favorite vocalist (unfortunately working session lately) Tim “Ripper” Owens who was the unique reason for me to listen, the “Perpetual Flame” L.P. two years ago. First of all, “Relentless” has different structure from its predecessor, since out of the 12 tracks of the album, half are instrumental reminding us the guitarist’s first releases. After listening a couple of times I find this this attempt to be successful despite my initial premonition that the album would be tiring and uninteresting. In all six songs with Ripper on vocals it is once more proven that the latter constitutes the ideal choice for any band, while specifically for Malmsteen’s group he manages to give motivation even to those tired from his latest albums. The great bet Malmsteen wins with “Relentless” is that of his instrumental compositions which are not tiring as usually, but in many cases constitute the album’s highlights. “Into Valhalla” and “Relentless” are two very good examples while on “Critical Mass” and “Enemy Within” the collaboration of Owens and Malmsteen is almost perfect. The only negative thing I can hear on this new album is a patchwork feeling of on the vocals production and Ripper’s performance in some cases, which confirms Owen’s statement that he just went on two rehearsals and suddenly heard about the release of the new album. Generally, Malmsteen’s fans will be very happy with “Relentless” while the others that have many years to listen to a Malmsteen’s new album, have a great chance to hear something good from him after many years of boring albums.
