 Neil Young
"Rock At The Beach"
Label: Showtime
Filmed in 1989 in Long Island, New York and the Jones Beach Theatre, what is included in this DVD is a pure sample of the great Canadian songwriter’s mid-period, when he managed to return to prominence after a decade of heavy experimentation and personal problems. This is not an official Neil Young release, however it is still a licensed release by a label that specializes in such releases that cannot be characterized as bootlegs. Therefore, this is a post dated release of an acoustic Neil Young show, one of the many he did to promote his 1989 album Freedom. Herein, Young, accompanied by a stripped-to-the-basics band, presents a set of classics. Few will complain for songs missing as classics like My My Hey Hey, Helpless, Too Far Gone, the Needle and the Damage Done, After The Godl Rush, Heart of Gold, Rockin’ In the Free World (in two different versions) are included here. Highlight of the film is when the other great American, Bruce Springsteen joins Young on stage for a quite nice performance of Down By The River, to conclude the show. Each and every one of Neil Young’s live performances is a pure experience of American tradition and culture. This acoustic set is no exception to that rule. Among the many different similar releases, this is just one more. What is standing out, might be the fact that this is a full acoustic set. Definitely, the appearance of Springsteen adds up to the score. Hard-core fans are set to buy this release. For the rest, this is an opportunity to start a Neil Young “videography”.
