"Gravity Of Light"
Label: Nuclear Blast
Four years after the release of the quite good “Crows Fly Black”, Marco Hietala’s and brother’s Zachary’s band returns with “Gravity Of Light”, their 8th studio album.
The recipe is the same and it is a heavy/power thing with melodic riffs, dynamic choruses and the distinct keyboards that give character to their music. Along with Heitala at the vocals, here comes singer/sampler Tommi Salmela.
“Satan Is Dead” is the opening and it is quite spectacular with nice vocal lines and interesting interchanges from dynamic, rapid riffs to mid tempo moments. Further along, the best songs in this album are “Hell Knows”, with its distinct slow riff which nearly flirts with doom and its voluptuous chorus. Some even better cuts are “Rise” with its strong chorus and the epic and progressive “Gone” that concludes this album. “Gone” along with “I Walk Forever” are the more orchestral moments in here. After that, the rest of the songs do not really sound interesting, being monotonous like “Magic & Technology” and “Sleep In the Dark”. “Caught In The Daylights” is reminiscent of several old Judas Priest songs.
In general, “Gravity Of Light”, even if weaker than “Crows Fly Black” is a relatively good album. It is surely not the band at its best, however there are several highlights here while the more mediocre ones reducing the value. |
