Thanatos
"Justified Genocide"
Label: Deity Down
Five years have passed since Thanatos’ previous, fourth album “Undead. Unholy. Divine”. These thrash / death veterans have added next to eight, brand new tracks in their new effort, a good cover to the classic “Dawn Of Eternity” (Massacre) plus two bonus from their own EP from 2006 (one of their own and another cover to “The Burning Of Sodom” of Dark Angel). This Dutch band offers plenty of the old-school death metal of the late 80s – early 90s. They are loyal to this genre since they’ve started with 1990’s “Emerging From The Netherworlds”! Their riffs are nice, their sound is strong and they play in high speeds without following the trends of today (gore, brutal death, grind etc.). Even their lyrics about the world’s destruction or about becoming rulers of the Netherlands (!!!) are somewhat old-fashioned. All of their material is quite good but generally they don’t do something over the top. Same thing happens with “Justified Genocide”. The idea of putting two covers (even if one is a bonus track) is very limitative for a band with its own character and personality. Even so, fans of albums such as “Leprosy”, “Altars Of Madness”, “Darkness Descends”, “From Beyond” etc. will find many interesting sounds in here; but no innovations. |
