"Terra Incognita: Beyond The Horizon"

Label: ProgRock Records

Roswell Six is a project initiated by musician and Prog Rock Records owner Shawn Gordon. International bestselling author Kevin J. Anderson and his wife Rebecca Moesta have created the main concept and written the lyrics, while musician/producer Erik Norlander (Rocket Scientists) is the main composer of the album. Norlander's wife, Lana Lane, who lays down the female vocals, and bassist Kurt Barabas (Under The Sun, Amarans Plight) complete the basic line up of Roswell Six that is furthermore surrounded and perfected by a team of exceptional guest musicians. In the album you will recognize names as  James LaBrie - Vocals (Dream Theater), Michael Sadler - Vocals (ex-Saga), John Payne - Vocals (Asia featuring John Payne), David Ragsdale - Violin (Kansas), Gary Wehrkamp – Guitar (Shadow Galley, Amaran’s Plight), Chris Brown - Guitar (Ghost Circus), Chris Quirarte - Drums (Prymary).

“Terra Incognita – Beyond The Horizon” has an overall progressive rock/metal atmosphere but with many classical influences from the 80s. The opening track “Ishalem” starts with an epic introduction filled with keyboards and great vocal segments. James LaBrie's excellent vocals on top of the synth give a dominating majestic feeling. “Inshalem” and some other tracks such as “Here Be Monsters” and “I Am The Point” have a good old rock style reminding us of early Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. The rest of the tracks are rather more modern and classical progressive metal blended with a lot of symphonic elements. You might say that the music patterns and the flow of the music is kind of predictable, at least for a progressive record, but the stars of this project are definitely the vocals and the lyrics, and I don’t mean to underestimate at all the rest musicians involved in it. There is a story told here and the way it is highlighted by the amazing voices of James LaBrie, Michael Sadler, John Payne and Lana Lane is beyond anything progressive rock has shown us till today. I have to admit that at first it was not what I was expecting to hear from a progressive album. I was expecting something way more complex and less predictable. But after several careful listens I realized how amazingly these simple melodies, with these low atmospheric keyboards in songs like “Letters In A Bottle” and “Halfway” exist only to emphasize the story of the album.

"Terra Incognita: Beyond The Horizon" is a great concept album. A very careful mix of symphonic progressive rock with heavy progressive metal sound that can be easily enjoyed by fans of melodic hard rock and melodic heavy metal as well. Highly recommended.
