Oblivion Myth
"Between Light And Shadow"
Label: Independent
Oblivion Myth’s homonymous debut, that has risen to meet a somewhat cult status, has actually been recorded for the third time and eventually reached our hands. ‘Nashville’s premiere metal band’? I don’t know if this self description can really stand out as credit, as, sincerely, no other band from the specific region comes in mind! Despite this fact, the band has grown in fame among the underground heavy/true metal scene’s maniacs. As a result, the first 2 editions of their debut album sold out and ended up costing a lot of money for the second-hand market buyer. Taking this into consideration, Oblivion Myth entered the studio and re-recorded this material, with Andy Freeman (the band’s producer) stepping up to fill in the gap behind the band’s microphone. ‘Between Light And Shadow’ kickstarts with the storming ‘Gathering of souls’, a trademark for the band’s style as well as an omen for the following songs’ quality. Well-played US power metal serves as the canvas, on which the band adds some speed/thrash brushes here and there, making the final outcome even more intriguing. The production could have reached higher standards, especially if someone takes into consideration that this is the third time they have put this on tape. Though it might be irritating for the inexperienced listener, I don’t even dare to suspect that this might prevent the genre’s fans from checking the cd out, as most of the songs easily surpass the average quality. ‘Knightserrant’ and ‘Twilight dementia’ though are definitely the highlights. Oblivion Myth’s have managed to create and augment a strong fanbase at their homeland as well as Europe, thanks to their inspired material and of course their loyalty to heavy metal values. The band though seems destined to remain within the boundaries of the underground scene, at least for the time being. As the true heavy metal fans are unfortunately a decreasing minority nowadays, especially in the US, a move to some European capital might really prove a lifesaver. Currently, the band is still in search of a vocalist, though plans of a second album have not faded at all. True metal freaks feel free to visit the band’s myspace page for more info. |
