Obscura
"Cosmogenesis"
Label: Relapse Records
Obscura’s from Bavaria first self-finannced album had made an impression with their 90s influenced production. A lot of fans enjoyed their freshly, composed material which also caused the mainman Steffen Kummerer to replace all other members gradually.
The newcomers (Jeroen Paul Thesseling on fretless bass guitar; ex-Pestilence and the two, ex-Necrophagist Christian Muenzner, Hannes Grossmann on guitars and drums, correspondingly) were great and “Cosmogenesis” was one of the highest anticipated albums for fans of technical death / thrash metal. The new Obscura line-up has made a very strong effort. They are influenced by Cynic, Morbid Angel, Death, Cephalic Carnage whilst the new guys have kept their past styles. Point is they don’t copy riffs but some common ideas in the orchestration sector. This happens quite often in younger bands and here it’s not on purpose and not all the time. At least that’s what the listener seems to get from this CD.
“Cosmogenesis” isn’t tiring, boring or belonging in one genre alone. If you want your death metal experimental but still aggressive, Obscura’s second album will be a pleasant companion. Its traveling mood and philosophical quests are by far its strongest elements. |
