"Journey Through Lands Unknown"

Label: Napalm Records

Pantheist released their third album entitled "Journey Through Lands Unknown". The band was created in Belgium in the early 2000 guided by a Greek originated person, Kostas. The music of Pantheist is based in the funeral doom genre having also several other influences that make their sound more special.

More specifically, the songs are mainly based on keyboards, have slow and melancholic tempo, and vocal varies between clean and death. "Deliverance" starts slow and dark and has much influence from psychedelic rock (which is strong throughout the song) and then continues with a heavy doom sound and death vocals leaving a very good impression. The next two tracks are moving in a moderate level they lack of cohesion and tire with bad clean vocals and with the several experiments of the band not to help at all. Only the doom / death parts save the situation. The next songs are clearly better with the beautiful instrumental "Haven" based on acoustic guitar and keyboards and the very good "Oblivion" with an excellent intro, the slow death and dark vocals and the clever outro in which we have the use of baglamas which fits very well. The "Loss Of Innocence" is perhaps the best song of the album with the classic style of the funeral death and the exceptional death vocals, while the keyboards play a vital role as they introduce several experimental elements and influences that blend perfectly with the tone of song. In the end, the 12-minute "Eternal Sorrow" is uninspired and boring.

"Journey Through Lands Unknown" is an album with many features, good and poor moments and certainly needs time and many hearings from someone to fully estimate the true value of this album. I would suggest it mainly to the fans of funeral death.
