Obduktion
"II"
Label: Secret Port Records
Obduktion is a Greek band from Athens and they’ve been playing since 1993. As stated in the album title, it’s their second full-length effort after 2003’s “Encounter In A Dream”. They have also released 3 demos and 2 EPs until they signed with Secret Port for their new work that doesn’t seem to differ much from what they’ve been doing all these years…
The album is retro in every way. The annoying drum machine brings memories of the Greek extreme metal scene during 1990-1995. The vocal style that sounded somewhat cult back then, is now too weak. The guitar riffs want to sound like Bolt Thrower or Obituary but are many miles away. And of course the classic metal leads that sounded renovate 15 years ago, became eventually one of the reasons for death metal’s decay. Some of their ideas are nice but only the ones closer to doom/death metal, still of the previous decade. Where things get more aggressive they just don’t do it good!
To be brief, Obduktion has improved some instrumentations and tries to produce something different from what is played today in the genre. However, they end up offering a Greek ‘90s demo! If they pursue a better sound (that means drum machine no more!) and expand their doom ideas something good might show up from them.
