"Torn"
Label: Steamhammer/SPV
Let’s begin with the uncontradictable data. Evergrey are a group with identity and recognisable personality. They are good musicians. They are marvellous authors of dark and theatrical atmosphere. Tom Englund is one of the best singers in metal today and has a voice that can make up the Alpha and the Omega of the creation that is Evergrey. Αll this is good, but what kind of music do Evergrey play? After all some people may have not heard them. Difficult question. They play power metal but no foreseeable. They play progressive metal but no unapproachable and narcissistic. They close their eye to Nevermore in some guitar leads it somebody could say. They have some gothic atmospheres would add some other. Possibly they are all these together, but they have structured the whole thing well, trust me.
Let’s go to Torn and the impressions that it leaves however. Sure it is the return of Evergrey in more progressive paths, leaving the simplicity of their previous work, which does not mean essentially that it was ad. The production is stunning and the sound is really bulky and impressive. The songs are for the most part rhythmical; the guitar melodies come second, while the keyboards are discreet and not tiring. The impression that the cd leaves to me however is that that the songs, their theme, their main melody is defined by Englund and everything is just prepared for him to tell his story, a feature that suits concept album better. There are not so many interesting instrumental parts. Apart from that, the new songs come to add nothing new or innovative.
In other words, we have a good album here, but no progress. Just very good maintenance. |
