Girlschool
"Legacy"
Label: SPV / Steamhammer
The oldest all-female heavy metal band, Girlschool, are celebrating this year their 30th anniversary with the release of the new album “Legacy”.The album has many special guests, who are except for Lemmy who is taken for granted, his bandmate in Motorhead Phil Campbell, J.J.French & Eddie Ojeda (Twisted Sister), Tony Iommi, Dio, ex Motorhead and currently Fastway Fast Eddie Clarke and Neil Murray (Fastway).
The beginning of the album is pounding with “Everything’s the same”, one of the album’s most dynamic songs, with powerful riffs and memorable lines. The feeling that lies all over while listening to the album, is that this band, while also pertaining its “oldschool” atmosphere in songs’ structure, has also a whole fresh energy and a heavier sound comparing to their past albums. Of course that doesn’t mean that there is a lack of the well-known rock n’roll/punk elements, which characterize the legendary quarter all these years. One of the best songs is “I spy”, which is featured in 2 versions, one with Girlschool only and one featuring Dio on vocals, which goes beyond their familiar “in your face” fast rock n’roll tempo, and is evolved to a slower, longer metal tempo. “Spend, spend, spend», could very well be a musical soundtrack in a Christmas movie, accompanying the transformation of old Scrooge, concluded by a wild metal/rock party (I get some crazy ideas sometimes!) ”Whole New world” is another song that surprises amazingly with its central “catchy” heavy riff and the powerful refrain. If I really should find songs with no real meaning of existence, these should be the cover of “Metropolis” and the different version of “Emergency” (without meaning that they are bad versions of course). In “Don’t talk to me” the infamous Lemmy takes over the vocals. Another one of my favorites is “Zeitgeist”, starting with cutting guitars and merciless drum poundings.
With this album, Girlschool are proving us that after 30 years of existence, they still have much more to give to the scene! |
