Jam Pain Society
"Black Light Messiah"
Label: Locomotive
This is another CD that fell in my hands accidentally and I know I could’ve passed to someone else but didn’t do so, since I liked it a lot! We’re talking about a new act from North Carolina, East Coast and this is their second album (if someone knows more about their debut “Disco 13”… well done underground hunters!). There is a large fellow in here named Ace Frehley that contributes a lead on ‘The Ride’ and I think I just got a lot of people’s attention. That’s good! Let’s move on…
“Black Light Messiah” is relevant with Mötley Crüe’s self titled work. That was a commercial flop but in this case we don’t judge a band already established in their style, yet a new act that has a lot of –let’s name them- industrial, funky and pop elements (especially due to some voices by singer Leah Kirby) and has created therefore an explosive hybrid; I would name this ‘poser metal of this decade’! Or even post-poser, something that all ‘pensioners’ from L.A. try to do but, in my opinion, lack the freshness and the appetite (for destruction?) Jam Pain Society present in this effort. Add Leah’s naughtiness, their heavy sound and technique and their wonderful ideas in a style replete long ago and you have a modern construction of something fully dedicated to the classic rock ‘n’ roll spirit!
The fact that we have excellent performers (e.g. Chris Hill-guitar, Greg Putnam-bass guitar) shouldn’t mislead to thoughts of tiring leads or musical jerk-offs. On the contrary, the solos are essential, rhythm changes are meaningful and the vocals amazing! This said by someone who really dislikes hard rock/metal frontwomen! The band themselves sees the best way to get J.P.S.’s feeling is by watching them performing on stage, something you can justify from their youtube uploads! Friends of hard rock with no restraint, if you got sick of the same food over & over get this disc wherever you see it! If you don’t believe me visit: www.myspace.com/jampainsociety |
