Trivium
"Shogun"
Label: Roadrunner Records
Trivium are one of the bands that many people love to hate and they are often accused of many faults and weaknesses. Some say they are nu-metal, others say they are Metallica-wannabes, others that they are copying Maiden's melodies and so it goes. I say let's not argue more about them and listen to their music instead.
In their new cd, Trivium make a turn. We have a mighty return of the growling vocals along with clean ones which characterized “Crusade”, they focus on the “maiden-like’ melodies and at the same time their riffs sound more metalcore than before. The classic heavy metal parts are not absent of course and sometimes it feels that you listen to a new-retro band in a good sense. All this mix is very attractive to me, but to be honest, many might easily not bother to give it a chance or be tired.
From the songs, the ones that stand out are "Torn Between Scylla And Charybdis" (respect for the title!!! ), "Down From The Sky", "Into The Mouth Of Hell We March" ant the twelve-minutes long epic title track which also closes the album. The mixing and the production are once again truly impressive.
And whereas their new disc will certainly not blow our brains out, it shows us a band in… an “ascendancy”, a band that has to give even more from now on…
