The Amenta

"Non"

Label: Listenable

A relatively new band, the Aussie ‘The Amenta’ return with their second long-awaited album. For those that have an idea of ‘The Berzerker’, their differences are noticed on lyrical themes and on the extras that are used in their sounds (and origin –Sidney’s ‘Amenta’, Melbourne’s ‘Berzerker’!). While the first like mythology, philosophy and mankind, ‘The Berzerker’ enjoy misanthropy, anger and destructive human mistakes (more human focused). As far as the sound additions, ‘The Amenta prefers more industrial noise in their samples , more mood changes in speed, longer songs and real drumming but most of all: have this majestic, escorting keys that transfer the listener to “Sin City” like sets!

A major change in their new CD is the slowing down of their supersonic speed parts; that is ‘Berzerker’ influence. While the many different parts in a song might make the result hard to digest, like ‘Nocturnus’ for instance, they have also some raw ‘Fear Factory’ like ideas. The samples play a bigger role but still the basis is terrorizing death / grind either with merciless double-bass or with blast beats. There are darker and terrifying feelings combined with their completely ‘freezing’, industrial ideas, with these epic keys, mentioned before, remain as sick loops most of the times. All these conclude to one thing: with the assistance of technical brutal / death metal act ‘Psycroptic’, ‘The Amenta’ wants to surprise us by doing something different & putting all the comparisons with their Australian partners in crime (note: while ‘The Berzerker’ seem stuck on their impressive 2000 debut…).

So we can fearlessly expect even more for next time. If they manage to expand the wonderful ideas you’ll listen to here, they’ll make a masterpiece. Still “Non” is one of the most interesting albums for 2008.
