This Or The Apocalypse
"Monuments"
Label: Lifeforce
Debut album from East Coast coming act; to be precise, they are from Pennsylvania. Who ever figures out hearing this record that they have just released their first effort must be experienced listener! Really cool! Like these guys here… that have released one of the finest albums this year.
They swing around ‘Shai Hulud’ and ‘Meshuggah’, which is ‘artistically’ done crossover between metal & hardcore with numerous rhythm changes and main characteristic the ‘spread all around’ drumming. I wouldn’t suggest this to the average mosh freak that’s into ‘Pro-Pain’ or ‘Stamping Ground’ for that matter but probably to experimenting prog guys that fear not the hardcore voice (hard but a few have done it) that rips your ears from the beginning to the end and give wonderful escort for the twisted guitars! Honestly, the duo Jack Esbenshade / Rodney Philips ‘draws’ crazy leads (some will remind you Iron Maiden?) and ‘disturbed’ rhythm parts.
Carson Slovak’s excellent production work exposes their rich sound, without losing in strength. I was amazed by this result whilst the great cover art and some-what pessimistic, for their country’s future, lyrics show 5 young and restless Americans that do have something to say. If you are willing to something strong without expecting to headbang, go for it; this is the thinking freak’s tunes… My space address: www.myspace.com/thisortheapocalypse.
