Amon Amarth
"Twilight Of The Thunder God"
Label: Metal Blade Records
This Swedish act is one of the most successful metal bands for this decade. They began back in 1992 and with slow and solid steps they won their battles and a contract with the legendary ‘Metal Blade’. They have a huge fan base, especially in the Northern Europe; a feedback that we receive from their epic lead parts and their Scandinavian tales. “Twilight…” is their seventh album and it seems to be taking from where “With Oden On Our Side” stopped 2 years ago.
The band has slowed down and follows middle speed pathways to express, even in their double bass – horse gallops! They sound, however, still very heavy, strong and have avoided traps like ‘melodic’ vocals, keyboards or modern groovy themes; they seem more aggressive, something that lacked from their 2 previous efforts.
Besides their classic sound, which is the barbaric warrior’s voice, melodic but large guitars, humming bass guitars and cavalry drumming, some ‘Entombed’ riffs make their appearance (along with L.G. Petrov on “Guardians Of Asgaard”), without this being too obvious. They even show signs of expanding their already played stuff without repeating riffs of the past.
If I were to pick something from Amon Amarth’s catalogue it would be “The Avenger”. But, even so, they still remain a band that won’t disappoint their fans even if they bring along the ‘twilight of the god of thunder’… |
