Appearance of Nothing

"Wasted Time"

Label: Escape Music

Appearance Of Nothing are Swiss and with their debut come to make a difference in the somehow monotonous habit of Escape Records to release almost exclusively hard rock/ AOR cds and prove their label to be right for being open-minded giving a chance to an ambitious progressive/symphonic metal band to be heard out there. I may exaggerate due to being a fan of this sound, but come on you guys, let's give the chance to interesting bands to release their records by decreasing the specialization of the labels in certain types of sound from the extreme metal to the softest hard rock. After all it's all rock and heavy metal, and when we forget that it is our ears and our musical clarity that lose at the end.

A.O.N are obviously apprentices in the magic of bands like Symphony X, Vanden Plas and Dream Theater and they surely have studied the work of their mentors very thoroughly. But don't turn your back to them just because of that .Ok, they still don't play those new, impressive, thrilling tunes like the one that had pleasantly shocked Bruce Dickinson when he listened to Dream Theater for the first time as himself has said, but these guys have nice ideas, very good sound( for that we can blame also their producer Markus Teske who has also worked with Symphony X and Vanden Plas- I am sure you hadn't seen that coming), strong potential in the songs' orchestration, they combine very well the aggressiveness with the atmosphere, their guitars coexist with the keyboards harmoniously and the have both parts where every instrument plays the leading role and leads and parts where the whole band works like a little orchestra that is heading towards the next progressive "risk". In addition to that the singer's voice has character that leads the songs higher. The 15-minute "Science Of Light" is an epitome of their sound, a composition full of different themes but not boring to those who is willing to listen to it carefully."Wasted Time" might as a title be off the beaten track but is definitely a debut of a band that is here to stay. Just listen to it.
