"What If..."

Label: Frontiers

Mr. Big are one of those bands that can make your mouth drop with their potential and technical abilities and the way they present their music. Most important, though, is one of those bands that can also appeal to a wider public than the technique freaks. With their work acclaimed since decades ago, under the Mr. big budge but also under their personal projects, what’s inside this album is somewhat expected. Unleashed guitars, bass-lines that elude their rhythmic obligations, a tight but swingy rhythm backbone and vocals out of the glorious 80s, those are the things one should expect from a Mr. big album.

With this “What If…” album, Mr. Big do not stray far from their successful recipe. Storming guitar parts from both the guitar and bass (!), outrageous pace and the omnipresent Van Halen influence. The band do once more what they know so well and the result is utterly satisfying. And even if there is no “To Be With You” or no “Wild World” this time to propel them to the top of the charts, it doesn’t matter at all. Anyway, for their kind of music, this is probably not a time for anthems.
