Atheist
"Jupiter"
Label: Season of Mist
Have you ever heard an expression that says “When we traveled to the moon you still ate directly from the trees”? Well, this suits perfectly one of the greatest and most underrated bands ever to come up from the metal scene since their style couldn’t approach the average listeners. Having issued three albums full of imagination, love for jazz & Watchtower but with a death metal background that worshipped Slayer, they returned with a reunion tour in 2006 after a 12 year hiatus! With a line-up of Scahefer/Flynn/Choy and two new guitarists (Baker/Carson) we lost our minds with their Greek show where we seeked for autographs like under aged kids from Steve Harris… “Jupiter” amazes with an unexpected back to the roots of “Piece Of Time” style, based on the two next ones! It’s very intense, aggressive and fast like their debut. It has a lot of classic Atheist riffs that remind of 1989 but the vocals are similar to “Elements” while the technique style and many ideas will remind of “Unquestionable…”. Obviously, there is freshness in the band due to the new comers (Jonathan Thompson-guitar while Chris Baker is on the bass guitar for this album) and an impressive Steve Flynn behind the drum kit! In this mighty return you will meet up with 8 equally strong tracks with a lot of strength and personality each, like good old times where a CD wasn’t 79 minutes but didn’t have so many dull moments that caused us to beg for it to end in the 45th minute! The band created an impressive album, worthy of their unbelievable heritage that some may think it’s their best offering. If this seems like a hurried assumption at this early moment, then “Jupiter” can fearlessly look at its predecessors. In August we can see Jupiter next to the moon. If we want to hear Jupiter from our speakers we’d better visit the nearest record store!
