"Venus In Overdrive" (2010 Edition)

Label: Frontiers

“Venus In Overdrive” is the album that sent Springfield back to the top slots on Billboard 200 (No 28), twenty years after “Rock Of Life”. In fact, tha original album was released in 2008 and what we now hold in our hands is a re-issue in a slightly different version.

It might be a sign of the times, it might be the fact that this kind of music does not evolve anymore, it might be that Springfield always was an American pop-rock music hero, the point is that twenty years later, Springfield rewrites the same song again and again and again. What’s fun, though, is that whatever the case, this same song sounds so very, very nice.

No matter what, it is a fact that this album that has done its rounds and I suppose that the only reason for its re-issue is that the label wished to place him within their new supply of releases, especially since they are now pretty active in the American music market. They also reserved a treat for the European fans with the complimentary DVD of Rick’s live performance in Rockford back in 2006. This DVD was a release of its own three years ago, but it is now nicely included in the package.

In total, “Venus in Overdrive” is the same old good album by Rick Springfield, the same thing he keeps doing for decades now. The Grammy-Award era of “Jessie’s Girl” might inevitably be in the past, however, Springfield’s music, even somehow “lighter” than his talent, still sounds agreeable and will always be adored by his American fan-base.
