"Promise Land"

Label: Frontiers

Giant are a strange kind of a band, since they have managed (and worth it too) to create a very good name among the melodic hard rock fans, scarcely appearing with an album, however all of them are between a good and a very good level, maintaining interest around their name for some twenty odd years. Alan Pasqua is, of course, not here (doing other, totally different things) and Dan Huff is practically absent too as he only appears writing 4 songs, adding up John Roth (Winger), along with Terry Brock and  Mike Brignardello this is the new Giant for 2010.

Giant should be one of the most “faithfull” to their sound bands ever, since from the first song (Believer), they travel back some twenty five years and to the traditional American AOR sound of the 80s. The Huff compositions and contribution connect the first era to this latest Giant era and with the contribution of Martensson and Sall (Eclipse and Work Of Art) they make the whole thing sound a little bit more fresh.

All this pure 80s essence, floats around this album and it is of no consequence to start mentioning each separate track. From the beginning to the end, the songs are of a high level, following that “sacred” recipe. Taking advantage of the very good musicianship, the new Giant released a very good AOR album that contains all those elements that make such a release remarkable. Even if one or two tracks in this album do not follow, this is, more or less, deterministic.

"Promise Land" is a necessary album for all those Giant fans, even if this version has little to do with the one from the 80s or the early 90s. This is a very good album for all traditional AOR fans and even if it fails to deliver originality, what it delivers is exactly what is required. Pretty good music.
