"The Evolution Of Chaos"

Mascot Records

I can still remember the intense memory of my first hearing of Heathen’s first album “Breaking The Silence”. That good first impression was followed by a true admiration for the relatively unknown band (at least in regard to other thrash bands) after the release of their amazing second release “Victims OF Deception” in ’91. Ever since I had totally forgotten their existence, until recently (in 2006 or 2007 if my memory does not fail me), that I learned about their albums’ free distribution through their website.

Finding out about their latest release was a pleasant surprise for me, hoping that it wouldn’t have to do with one more pointless reunion which benefits from the revival of the thrash metal scene, and fortunately the truth went beyond my expectations. All the compositions are extremely inspired with no mediocre songs and it combines all the elements that contribute to the exceptional reference in “Bay Area” as an almost individual genre. The album consists of spectacular riffs, many and melodic solos by  Lee Altus (also guitarist of Exodus) and Kragen Lum, melodic breaks and high quality vocals by David White, who has not lost his top form since the era of “Victims Of Deception”. The clear and flawless production adds one more touch to the final extraordinary outcome.

The songs consist of fast thrash, as well as slow melodic lines, like in the 11 minutes “No Stone Unturned”, a true epic anthem with many changes and acoustic parts. Here I must repeat the exemplary guitar work done, which is something rare for a thrash metal album. “Arrows Of Agony” is one of the album’s best tracks, containing a dynamic riff, choruses (also a vital part of “Undone”) and many technical solos through its entire duration. My favorite “A Hero’s Welcome”, with its melodic intro and its galloping epic riff, is a song that many epic/power metal bands would wish to write. In “Control By Chaos” we have the participation from Gary Holt from Exodus, and here once again the exquisite guitars take the lead (of course all members have to be complimented for their technical and executive adequacy). “Silent Nothingness”  is a flattening thrash metal hurricane, while “Red Tears Of Disgrace” takes the listeners by surprise with its lyrical intro and “clean” vocals at the beginning and continuous with the amazing riffs and extra quality solos (yes, I know how many times I mentioned that, but trust me it’s worth it).

“Evolution Of Chaos” is the definition of how Bay Area thrash/speed metal of truly high quality should be played. If you ever loved this genre of if you would like to get to know it, this album should definitely be in your collection.
