Midnattsol
"Nordlys"
Label: SPV
Midnattsol From Finland are a nordic folk metal band, something that causes us to think of north, celtic influences, cold atmospheres and temperatures....Furthermore, the microphone is held by a woman, which is not breaking news anymore especially for the metal bands from the north.
Midnattsol make seem to make an important effort to match their singer's voice with their music, which is made of certain classic heavy riffs and some quality melodic guitar lines as well as the necessary atmosphere for this music idiom, which comes from the keyboards and the strings. The traditional heavy influences are quite welcome, but in many parts vocals and music do not blend with each other, and this is because the music calls for a more direct and aggressive approach rather than the well known recipe of operatic female vocals. This results in a small lack of unity and a difficulty for the cd to capture the listener's attention until the end. I found some common places with After Forever and Epica as far as vocals are concerned. The songs I preferred were ''Wintertime" and "En Natt i Nord".
The conclusion is that Midnattsol are really trying but still abstain from presenting an outcome that will electrify us... |
