Darkology

"Altered Reflections"

Label: Rockaholics Records

Darkology is a relatively new band formed by brothers Harris from Texas who release their first album through the also brand new Greek label Rock-A-Holics Records.

The band has been in existence for almost five years but they felt ready to make the recordings for a full length CD when their singer Sundown joined, whose large vocal range and potential was suitable for their demanding compositions which needed a competent voice and mainly high-pitched vocals. So, this singer was the right one to express their sound (being an ex- vocalist of Beyond Twilight succeeding one of the greatest metal singers of our times, Jorn Lande, that certainly means something) which ranges from classic metal (Judas Priest) to more ‘special’ bands like Crimson Glory with some sort of a progressive approach, not in an incomprehensible and over-complicated way of writing, but in the sense of exposing different ideas in the same song without having the fear that the songs will be less direct and catchy. To a more open minded ear this will not cause any disturbance at all. On the contrary, their music remains pure metal having a great connection with the sound of big US metal bands, such as Iced Earth mainly and Jag Panzer or Brainstorm in some ways. Apart from that, Sundown’s voice reminds me intensely of Tim Ripper Owens especially on the high notes. The guitar riffs are the ones that lead and blend the whole sound followed up by good moments in the solo parts, giving their music a total guitar–based mentality which matches my musical tastes, as far as this kind of music is concerned.

In conclusion, in order to put the necessary labels which we all love to hate, Darkology play modern, aggressive metal and they are thoughtful enough to be different. If they keep up the pace we will be hearing about them more often in the future and they will distinguish themselves from the ocean of bands that play the same music. And this is something hard to achieve nowadays, trust me.
Nice start…
