New album for the talented and versatile progressive death metal band with an important change in regards to their previous album. The singer, Chris Alvestam, who was a very important member of the group and part of their creative identity, left the band and was replaced by two singers, one for the brutal vocals and one the clean vocals. I was impressed by the fact that the supporters of the band in the metal press as well as the fans were very concerned about how that gap that he left behind him would be filled in. In fact, there is nothing missing from the aspect of technique. The new ones follow the traces of the old one, singing exactly with the same style, so…there isn’t any vociferous change.
So, what’s the content of this new cd? Songs are in the style that it’s familiar to us from the band’s previous albums. Futuristic themes which are related to the space and its phenomena, melodic death with impressive technical skills and many musical ideas and alternation of subjects which refer to progressive metal. Melodies, which in some points remind us of power metal, catchy and melodic choruses that have as a makeweight the brutal vocals of the other singer. Additionally, special and dynamic riffs are the basis which holds to familiar paths and down-to-earth a set of studious and complex music conceptions which, in some points, tend to touch a jazz attitude. It is unchallengeable that it’s a special band and that’s why I was so positive about them also with their previous album. What makes me be more restrained about their new cd is that I have noticed a small lack of the originality and the momentum, and also less fresh and catchy songs. By no means are the new songs bad but they are not as impressive and unique as the ones before them. Maybe the band focused more on establishing their style so as to make the transition that was required due to the departure of their singer more smoothly. Nevertheless, in this cd one should definitely pay attention to the excellent guitar work. Therefore, I am expecting eagerly their next record, which will hopefully be also a step of evolution. |
