Steve Morse Band
"Out Standing In The Field"
Label: Eagle Rock
Steve Morse is one of the most recognizable and talented guitarists in the rock and jazz genre. Whatever we say about him is just not enough. In 1972 he and Andy West founded one of the best jazz fusion bands, Dixie Dregs (of which Morse is the leader), he was a member of Kansas from 1986 to 1989 participating in "Power" and "In The Spirit Of Things" albums and, since 1994, he is the guitarist of the legendary Deep Purple. After 1984 he started his own solo project under the name Steve Morse Band. Besides all of these, he has his own Music Man signature guitar model (John Petrucci, Steve Lukather and others have also Music Man signature guitar models). This year, the Steve Morse Band release their 12th instrumental studio album entitled "Out Standing In Their Field" for which Morse worked again with Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, John Petrucci, Joe Satriani) on the bass guitar and Van Romaine on drums.
Morse, LaRue and Romaine work together permanently from the "Southern Steel" album in 1991 and then and, as a result, they cooperate and combine very well. In "Out Standing In Their Field” the band sounds more solid than ever performing their best in every song. This fact combined with the beautiful and mature compositions of Steve Morse classifies the album among the best releases of the Steve Morse Band. In particular, Dave LaRue on the bass is excellent, as expected, showing in many songs his great abilities and Van Romaine proves once again that it is a great drummer. For Steve Morse words are not enough...he is a huge musician with an incredible technique. Simply fantastic.
All the instrumental songs in "Out Standing In Their Field" are based on a combination of jazz / rock and progressive rock elements, but beyond that each song has its own style and sound. In some songs the progressive elements dominate, in others the jazz fusion, country elements make a strong appearance (“John Deere Letter”), while influences from classical music are also more than clear (“Baroque ‘N Dreams”). Finally some funk elements are scattered into several songs. Other tracks that stand out from the beginning are the amazing "Name Dropping", "Brink Of The Edge" and "Time Junction". Finally the album also includes an incredible 9-minute live version of "Rising Power" (whose original studio version is in the “SressFest" album of 1996).
"Out Standing In Their Field" is an album that will surely satisfy the lovers of jazz fusion and instrumental progressive rock! |
