Dark Tranquillity

"We Are The Void"

Label: Century Media

Dark Tranquillity, one of Sweden’s oldest and most consistent melodic death metal bands, return there ninth album. I think that all Dark Tranquillity fans would agree that we have already seen the peak of their charier with 2002’s album Damage Done. After that massive album, the band came to a lower state. Their next two albums were still of high quality, and maintaining their particular style, but hopes that they will again compose an album equal to their two greatest achievements (Damage Done, The Gallery) have slowly diminished. We Are The Void again is nowhere close to their top albums, but still it contains another great set of songs.

The album is much like “Fiction” (2007). The sound is more focused on keyboard melody than recent albums, reminding melodies of “Haven”(2000), but also has some heavy thrash elements of “Damage Done” (2002) and “Character” (2005).

The opening track, “Shadow In Our Blood” is one of the strongest tracks, only to be followed by the very different “Dream Oblivion,” a catchy song which shows off the band’s renewed obsession with keyboard melodies. Several of the following songs, still all quite good, just go among a wide collection many more Dark Tranquillity song. An exception is “The Grandest Accusation”, A very powerful song which mixes their modern riffs of their recent albums with the melodies of “The Gallery”. We Are The Void has a very strong epilogue of songs which pushes up its overall value. Starting with the intense, and slightly blackened “Arkhangelsk,” and continues into “I Am The Void”. These two tracks, are some of the album’s nicest and well-composed material. The album concludes with the song “Iridium”, a beautiful, more emotional song, with a heavy tone, changes between clean and brutal vocals and clean and distorted guitars. This song pretty much has everything, melodies, heavy riffs, nice solos. Its probably the best song of the album.

We Are The Void is one more great album in Dark Tranquillity’s discography who have provided us for 20 years now with best quality melodeath music. It might not be one of there best album but still it probably reaches the expectation of Dark Tranquillity fans.
